The Palm Springs International Film Festival entered its seventh day Wednesday, featuring Student Screening Day and preparations for the announcement of juried awards later this week.
More than 900 Coachella Valley students from 13 regional high schools will be able to catch a 9:30 a.m. screening of Tracie Laymon’s “Bob Trevino Likes It” on Wednesday, followed by a photo opportunity and Q&A session with Laymon and executive producer Jacqueline Reinish.
Indio mayor Glenn Miller is expected to be in attendance, as well as festival chair Nachhattar Singh Chandi and artistic director Lili Rodriguez.
Among the schools participating in the event are Amistad High School, Coachella Valley High School, Desert Mirage High School, La Familia High School, Indio High School, Palm Desert High School, Palm Springs High School, Palm Valley High School, La Quinta High School, Shadow Hills High School, Summit High School, West Shores High School, and Yucca Valley High School.
Many ex-Student Screening Day participants have participated in PSIFF’s Youth Jury in later years, according to festival organizers, with some attaining jobs in the film industry or as festival staff.
Other screenings on Wednesday include “The Girl with the Needle,” “Emilia Pérez,” “Vermiglio,” “How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies,” “Armand,” “From Ground Zero” and “Santosh,” all of which were among the 15 movies shortlisted for the International Feature Film category at the next Academy Awards.
