The Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce will posthumously honor radio actress Elinor Harriot with the 478th star on the Walk of the Stars, slated for next week.

The chamber announced last week that it will unveil the new star at the Downtown Palm Springs Park at 11 a.m. on April 25.

Harriot’s career began as a Broadway actress in the 1932 play “Bride the Sun Shines On,” where she replaced the former leading actress, Dorothy Gish, on an hour’s notice, city officials said in a statement.

She is best known for her role as Ruby Taylor in the long-running “Amos ‘n’ Andy” radio show, which was broadcast from the El Mirador tower in Palm Springs during the 1930s.

Harriot also voiced other characters on the show until her retirement in 1955.

After leaving show business, Harriot was active in Beverly Hills civic life. She was elected president of the Beverly Hills Board of Education in the 1960s, where she helped erase racial barriers at schools. She also helped create the Beverly Hills Library, raised funds for the creation of the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art and was integral in several other community activities.

She died June 10, 2000, in Beverly Hills.

Those seeking information about the free star dedication was asked to contact walkofthestras@pschamber.org, or the Palm Springs Chamber of Commerce at 760-325-1577.
