A 41-year-old man was being held on $350,000 bail Wednesday following his arrest for allegedly stabbing a Palm Springs police officer in the hand.

Officers were dispatched to the 1500 block of North Sunrise Way regarding a report of a disturbance at approximately 2:40 p.m. Tuesday, according to the Palm Springs Police Department.

They located the suspect, who allegedly was causing a disturbance and refused to leave the premises.

While talking with officers, the suspect allegedly produced a knife and stabbed one of the officers in the hand. He was subdued with minimal force and taken into custody without further incident, police said.

The injured officer was taken to a hospital.

Phillip Smith was booked into the John J. Benoit Detention Center in Indio on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon on a peace officer and trespassing, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues, police said.

“The incident serves as a solemn reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous situations law enforcement face each day while protecting our community,” the department said in a statement. “The Palm Springs Police Department remains committed to ensuring the safety of all residents and encourages continued public support for the men and women who serve.”
