More extreme heat is expected Sunday across much of Riverside County before a cooling trend sets in later this week, according to the National Weather Service.
The agency said a ridge of high pressure that moved into the region off the Northern California coast is expected to move on Sunday.
“As the ridge begins to slide eastward … Sunday, afternoon temperatures [will] begin to cool off, but still remain 15 to 20 degrees above normal,” the NWS said.
Forecasters predicted temperatures in the area would reach 96 on Sunday, with an overnight low of 60.
Temecula, which reached a high of 98 Saturday, would likely reach a high of 92 Sunday with a low of 55, according to the NWS.
Highs in Hemet, where it was 102 Saturday, was expected to drop to 96 degrees Sunday with a nighttime low of 57.
In the Coachella Valley, Sunday temperatures are expected to remain in the triple digits.
Meteorologists said the high pressure will give way to several low pressure troughs starting Monday, leading to a gradual cooling trend, a return of deep marine layers over the western half of the inland region and the possibility of light rain this week.
