The South Coast Air Quality Management District Wednesday issued a windblown dust advisory in the Coachella Valley.

The advisory was in effect from 4 p.m. Wednesday through at least 11 a.m. Friday in the areas of Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Palm Springs, Indio, La Quinta, Mecca and Desert Hot Springs.

Conditions were expected to reach “very unhealthy” levels through Friday morning in the northwestern Coachella Valley, and in other areas in the region will be “unhealthy for sensitive groups” from 6 p.m. Thursday to Friday morning, the agency reported.

Gusty winds up to 43 mph were expected to cause periods of elevated particle pollution.

The agency advised residents in the affected areas to limit outdoor activity, remain indoors with windows and doors closed and use air conditioning or an air purifier.

Air quality can vary by hour depending on wind conditions. Current air quality by area is available at aqmd.gov/AQImap.
