Scorching temperatures throughout Riverside County this weekend have prompted a heat advisory in western areas of the county as well as an extreme heat warning in the eastern areas.

The heat advisory issued for the areas of Moreno Valley, Riverside, Idyllwild-Pine Cove, Corona, Temecula and Hemet was expected to remain effective until at least 8 p.m. Monday, according to the National Weather Service.

The extreme heat warning, issued for the areas of Indio, Cathedral City, La Quinta, Coachella, Borrego Springs, Palm Desert Country, Palm Springs and Palm Desert, was expected to remain effective until at least 8 p.m. Friday.

Saturday’s temperatures were expected to reach a high of 102 in the downtown Riverside area, 98 in Temecula, 104 in Hemet, 114 in Coachella and 113 in Palm Springs.

“Above average high and low temperatures will continue through next week. Widespread moderate to locally major heat risk for the coast, valleys, and mountains except near the beaches and for the higher elevations in the mountains, with major to extreme heat risk for the lower deserts,” the NWS announced.

Next week, temperatures of up to 114 degrees are expected in the Coachella Valley and the San Gorgonio Pass near Banning, with overnight temperatures about 5 to 8 degrees above normal, according to the NWS.

Temperatures in western areas of Riverside County were expected to range from 98 to 106 all of next week with overnight temperatures in the low to mid-70s.

Health officials advised people to drink plenty of fluids, stay out of the sun during the hottest parts of the day and check up on relatives and neighbors. The public was also urged to never leave children or pets in parked vehicles for even a minute, as temperatures inside vehicles can reach deadly levels in virtually no time.
