The Los Angeles Chargers announced they had agreed to terms on a four-year contract with outside linebacker Melvin Ingram, who they had placed the “non-exclusive” franchise tag on.
Ingram had been free to negotiate with other teams, but the Chargers would have had the right to match a contract offer he received. If the Chargers chose not to match that offer, they would receive two first-round draft choices from the team signing him. The compensation made it unlikely another team would sign Ingram.
The 6-foot-2-inch 247-pound Ingram made eight sacks in the 2016 season, second on the team. He was chosen by the Chargers in the first round of the 2012 draft out of South Carolina and has played his entire NFL career with the team.
Terms of the contract Sunday were not announced.
