The Los Angeles Rams announced the signing of former Cleveland Browns kicker Travis Coons.
“I think the thing is being mindful of how good you feel about your specialists you have in place and offering an opportunity to be able to have somebody play in the second half that can both punt and kick because you feel so good about (kicker) Greg (Zuerlein) and (punter) Johnny (Hekker) and that’s what that’ll provide for us,” Rams coach Sean McVay said after Thursday’s practice at UC Irvine.
The signing on Thursday comes two days before the Rams open preseason play against the Dallas Cowboys at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It increases the Rams roster to the 90-player limit.
Coons made 28 of 32 field goal attempts for the Browns in 2015, his only season in the NFL. He was released by the team during the 2016 preseason.
Coons punted and kicked for the University of Washington 2012 and 2013 after starting his college career at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut. Coons also played for Alta Loma High School.
