Mirai Nagasu of Arcadia was among the three women selected by U.S. Figure Skating to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics.
“Thank you to everyone who never stopped believing,” Nagasu tweeted Saturday, shortly after the decision was announced.
Nagasu is the first U.S. woman figure skater to return to the Olympics after missing an edition.
Nagasu finished second in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, which concluded Friday in San Jose. Olympic berths were decided by a U.S. Figure Skating committee based on a series of events.
In other Olympic selection events, the 24-year-old Nagasu was fourth and ninth in her two Grand Prix events and third in the 2017 Four Continents Championships, the best finish by an American, second in the 2017 U.S. International Classic and fourth in the 2017 national championships.
Nagasu was 14 when she won the national championship in 2008. She was fourth in the 2010 Olympics and not chosen for the 2014 team despite finishing third at the national championship.
The other skaters selected were Bradie Tennell, a 19-year-old from Carpentersville, Illinois, who won the national championship, and Karen Chen, an 18-year-old from Fremont in Northern California who trains in Riverside and was third in the national championship after winning in 2017.
