The largest crowd for a sporting event in the Los Angeles area since the start of the coronavirus pandemic came to the Coliseum Saturday evening for Mexico’s 4-0 victory over Nigeria in a men’s exhibition soccer game.
The crowd announced at 53,258 was 916 higher than the previous high, 52,342 for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ 3-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
Héctor Herrera opened the scoring in the second minute and Rogelio Funes scored two minutes later. Herrera scored again in the 52nd minute. Jonathan dos Santos concluded the scoring in the 78th minute of the 90-minute game.
The game was the fourth of the Mexican team’s U.S. tour in advance of the CONCACAF Gold Cup. Mexico will open play in the championship of the North American, Central American and Caribbean region next Saturday against an opponent to be determined at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
