A 19-year-old woman was killed and a 22-year-old woman suffered major injuries in a head-on crash in Lakeview, authorities said Thursday.
The crash was reported at 7:38 p.m. Wednesday in the area of the Ramona Expressway and Bernasconi Road, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Kayla Castro of San Jacinto died at the scene, the Riverside County coroner’s office reported.
The other driver, identified as Maria Delgado of San Jacinto, was taken to a hospital for treatment of major injuries, according to the CHP.
Investigators said Castro was driving west on Ramona Expressway west of Bernasconi Road in a 2007 Toyota and Delgado was eastbound on Ramona Expressway in a 2015 Honda.
“For reasons still under investigation, the driver of the Toyota crossed the double yellow lines and began traveling westbound in the eastbound lane, directly in the path of the Honda,” Dan Olivas of the CHP said.
“Ms. Delgado observed the Toyota immediately ahead and steered into the south shoulder of the roadway, in an attempt to avoid the Toyota. The driver of the Toyota simultaneously steered her vehicle onto the south shoulder, directly into the path of the Honda. The two vehicles subsequently collided head on.”
