Four hikers traversing Ladder Canyon Trail near Mecca were hoisted to safety Friday by a helicopter crew after they reported having difficulty completing their trek amid triple-digit temperatures.

The hikers were experiencing “general weakness” while out on the trail, according to Riverside County Fire Department officials, who sent rescuers to assist the group at 2:23 p.m.

Firefighters hiked to their location, and a California Highway Patrol helicopter crew assisted with the rescue.

The hikers refused medical care.
