A wildfire in Jurupa Valley Saturday charred 250 acres and was 50% contained by a line of cleared vegetation.

The fire was reported at 3:09 p.m. near Sierra Avenue and Karen Lane, according to the Riverside County Fire Department’s Jody Hagemann.

The blaze was initially estimated to be up to 10 acres before growing to 20 acres, and ultimately to 250.

Low humidity, westward winds of 17 mph and temperatures in the 90s were helping to fuel the fire, which was burning in light grasses, fire officials said.

By 8 p.m., Hagemann reported firefighters had stopped forward progress and the flames were 50% contained.

About 225 firefighters were on the scene, and two helicopters and six air tankers fought flames from the sky.

“Resources will remain on scene overnight as they work to improve containment lines,” she said.

No structures were damaged and no injuries were reported, Hagemann said.

Riverside County sheriff’s deputies closed Sierra Avenue from Armstrong Road to the San Bernardino County line.
