Rancho Mirage city staffers are soliciting public input on the proposed reconfiguration of billionaire Larry Ellison’s secluded Coachella Valley enclave, which he plans to turn into an exclusive health and wellness resort to be called the Porcupine Creek Retreat.

The Oracle founder’s private home and golf course, dubbed Porcupine Creek, was completed in 2011 atop 230 acres west of Highway 111.

“The Retreat will be an exclusive destination for health and wellness enthusiasts, and therefore not open to the general public,” according to the project website. “Staff and service personnel will provide a six-star experience at the relatively small profile property with a maximum of only 50 keys.”

The city of Rancho Mirage this week issued a public notice of preparation urging residents to submit their comments on the proposed development.

According to the project website, developers are aiming for an environmental impact report to be released for public viewing by the fall, with construction expected to start up as soon as early 2021.

Since Ellison purchased Porcupine Creek nearly a decade ago for $43 million, the estate has become a notable stop for the rich and famous in the Coachella Valley. President Donald Trump attended a campaign fundraising event in February at the estate, where tickets started at $100,000.

There are currently 23 individual units on the property, and proposed plans call for an increase of up to 27 more, for a total of 50.

Proposed upgrades are planned for the golf course and main house, along with the construction of a new restaurant and dining deck. The estate’s spa complex would also be beefed up, and “retreat-related facilities” would also be added, according to city planning documents.

The retreat would encompass 191 acres, with the rest of the acreage reserved as open space.

Anyone with comments regarding the proposed project is urged to contact Majna Dukic, planning manager for Rancho Mirage, at 760-328-2266 or Majnad@RanchoMirageCA.gov.
