A wildfire that has charred 52 acres in Whitewater was 70% contained Monday, with no structures under threat.

The non-injury blaze — its size was revised down from earlier estimates due to remapping — was reported Sunday at 1:26 p.m. near Whitewater Canyon Road in the Whitewater Preserve area, about 10 miles east of the massive Apple Fire, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

About 220 firefighters were dispatched to the area, along with three helicopters and three air tankers.

The fire’s forward rate of spread was halted by about 5 p.m. Sunday, but crews remained on scene extinguishing any remaining flames and continuing to build containment line around the fire’s perimeter.

No mandatory evacuations were in place, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Interstate 10 off-ramps for Whitewater Canyon Road were closed in both directions, as well as Tipton Road from Wendy Road to the I-10, according to sheriff’s officials.
