An 18-year-old man who was killed in a multi-vehicle traffic collision in South Los Angeles was identified Wednesday by county authorities.

The county Office of Medical Examiner determined the victim was Juan Sanchez Salas.

Firefighters responded at 2:03 p.m. Tuesday to an area near Vermont and Colden avenues, where Salas was pronounced dead at the scene and two others were taken to a hospital in unknown condition, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The cause of the collision was under investigation, but according to the California Highway Patrol’s preliminary findings, a black Chevrolet Suburban was being driven at high speed when it slammed into the gray Audi A3 that Salas was driving.

The driver of another involved vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital, along with the Suburban driver, according to the CHP, which determined alcohol was not a factor in the collision.

Anyone with information about the collision was urged to call the CHP’s West L.A. Area office to speak with Officer R. Hatcher at 323-259-3200.
