Los Angeles World Airports Monday announced the completion of a waterline relocation project that was needed to facilitate a major project aimed at cutting down on vehicle traffic traveling in and out of LAX.
The $5.5 billion program will include a Consolidated Rent-A-Car Center that will bring together more than 20 car rental offices and feature a 2.25-mile Automated People Mover to eliminate the need for rental car courtesy vehicles to enter the central terminal area and reduce the number of autos driving in and out of the airport by an estimated 3,200 each day.
But before any of that work can be completed, a new waterline needed to be installed.
LAWA, in conjunction with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, built and connected a reclaimed waterline on Westchester Parkway between Airport Boulevard and Jenny Avenue. The reclaimed waterline transports water that has been processed to remove waste and other contaminants, and then repurposed for irrigation and other industrial needs.
“While it is a megaproject, the Landside Access Modernization Program is actually made up of a series of small and large construction projects, each one enabling the next,” said Bernardo Gogna, LAMP program executive for LAWA. “The completion of the new reclaimed waterline on Westchester Parkway is an important step in building the automated people mover train, the ITF-West and other components of our program.”
