A fire erupted Thursday in a tractor-trailer parked at a Riverside intersection, consuming the truck and threatening to spread into surrounding brush until crews got it under control.

The non-injury blaze was reported about 10:20 a.m. at Jurupa and Tyler streets, according to the Riverside Fire Department.

Battalion Chief Scott Wilson said four engine crews were sent to the location and encountered fire raging in the engine compartment of the big rig.

The blaze spread to the rest of the truck and extended into a large mulch pile, causing additional fires “around the vehicle and in adjacent mulch piles,” Wilson said.

He said personnel fully contained the blaze a half-hour later, preventing it from expanding into vegetation. The flames were fully extinguished about 2 p.m.

The cause of the fire was under investigation.
