Freeway traffic in the Pomona area was snarled Saturday while the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s bomb squad ensured a box with wires on a roadside was safe.

The California Highway Patrol said it received word at about 9:40 a.m. Saturday about a package described as “a green ammunition container attached to a pole, with multiple wires protruding from it” on the northbound Chino Valley (71) Freeway where it connects to the westbound Pomona (60) Freeway.

Officers responded to the scene and confirmed the presence of the suspicious item and the sheriff’s Arson and Explosives Detail was called to the scene, the CHP reported.

The CHP and Caltrans then closed sections of the Pomona and Chino Valley freeways in the area while experts took a closer look and eventually destroyed it, according to the CHP.

It was ultimately determined that the item was not an explosive device and posed no threat, the CHP reported. The sections of freeway were reopened about 5:05 p.m.
