The Downtown San Pedro Business Improvement District has been awarded a $470,000 grant from the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power, in partnership with Cal State Northridge, to fund the launch of a fully electric trolley shuttle service, officials announced Tuesday.
The trolley service will be designed to reduce emissions, improve public access, and enhance the visitor experience along the LA Waterfront, officials said.
The new electric trolleys will join the existing fleet of four red trolleys already serving the San Pedro community. Offering free transportation throughout downtown San Pedro and the LA Waterfront, the expanded fleet will connect travelers to major attractions including the Battleship IOWA, the San Pedro Fish Market, the Cruise Terminal, West Harbor and the historic downtown district.
In addition to regular service, the trolleys will also be available for private rentals.
“This is a transformative moment for San Pedro and a testament to the vision and dedication of our team,” said Ryan Blaney, president & CEO of the Downtown San Pedro Business Improvement District, also known as Discover San Pedro.
“We are especially grateful to Stazy Trevizo, who led this effort with tenacity and heart. Her commitment to our community’s sustainability and accessibility goals is the reason this project is moving forward. This grant positions San Pedro at the forefront of environmentally conscious urban transit.”
