A heat advisory will go into effect Monday in many areas of Riverside County, where temperatures will soar well above 100 degrees on Labor Day.
The advisory will be in effect from 10 a.m. Monday to at least 6 p.m. Tuesday in areas including downtown Riverside, Temecula and Hemet, according to the National Weather Service.
“The ridge is going to begin to expand further westward and allow for highs to be even warmer tomorrow, with highs likely topping out above the 100 degree mark for most locations within the Inland Empire. For this reason, a Heat Advisory is in place tomorrow for all of the inland areas, including Orange and San Diego counties,” the NWS said Sunday.
The Riverside metropolitan area was predicted to reach 100 degrees on Sunday and 102 on Labor Day, according to the NWS.
Coachella Valley temperatures will be the highest in the county, with Coachella reaching 111 on Sunday and Labor Day. Palm Springs was predicted to be just a couple degrees cooler, reaching a high of 110 Sunday and 109 Monday, according to the NWS.
Temecula temperatures are expected to be in the high 90s Sunday and Labor Day while Hemet was expected to see triple-digit temperatures all weekend, reaching a high of 103 by Monday.
Monday and Tuesday are expected to be the warmest days of the week throughout the county.
A slight cooling trend is expected later this week, with temperatures cooling off by about 5 to 7 degrees for the following weekend.
In the meantime, health officials urged residents to avoid strenuous outdoor activity, drink plenty of fluids and to check on those at risk for heat-related illness, such as people who are sick or have chronic conditions, older adults and pregnant women.
The public was also reminded to never leave children and pets in a vehicle without air conditioning on for even one minute, as vehicle temperatures can quickly rise to deadly levels.
