Police sought the public’s assistance Tuesday in locating a suspected fatal hit-and-run driver who struck and killed a 65-year-old pedestrian from Chicago in South Los Angeles.

The man was walking on Figueroa Street when he was hit by a northbound silver four-door sedan near 75th Street around 3:10 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Police said the driver failed to stop and render aid to the victim, continuing to travel north. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics responded to the location, where they pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene.

He was later identified by detectives as Jose Melesio.

“Drivers are reminded that if they become involved in a collision, they should pull over and stop as soon as it is safe to do so, notify emergency services, and remain at the scene to identify themselves,” police said in a statement.

A reward of up to $50,000 is being offered for information leading to the suspect’s identification, arrest and conviction.

Anyone with information regarding the fatal hit-and-run collision was urged to call the LAPD South Traffic Division at 213-321-9681. Calls during non-business hours should be directed to 877-527-3247. Tipsters who prefer to remain anonymous can call Crime Stoppers or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
