The Palm Springs Air Museum will host the annual Memorial Day Flower Drop and Air Fair Monday, where 5,000 flowers will descend from the sky set to honor the nation’s fallen service members.
The event will start at 10 a.m. Monday with flight exhibitions at the museum, at 745 North Gene Autry Trail, with the flower drop ceremony to follow at 1 p.m. The event will also feature live music, food vendors, children’s activities and Warbird flight demonstrations and rides.
The 3-4 Missing Man Formation will honor all fallen U.S. service members, commemorate the 50th anniversary of the ending of the Vietnam War and will give attendees an opportunity to meet three Vietnam aviator honorees: Bronze Star recipient Gary Lucas, distinguished Flying Cross recipient Frank Tullo and distinguished Flying Cross recipient Randy Zahn.
The formation will drop 5,000 red and white carnations, officials said. White carnations represents veterans of WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam, and red carnations will honor service members killed in recent conflicts, including Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition, a dozen red roses will be included to honor Gold Star families.
This year’s missing man formation will be flown by four vintage warbirds.
