Two newly colorized episodes of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” selected by series creator Carl Reiner to showcase his favorite episodes featuring Van Dyke will air from 9:01-10 p.m. Friday evening on CBS.
“After seeing only two seconds of 92-year-old Dick dancing in the new `Mary Poppins’ movie, I picked shows that featured Dick’s physical comedy,” said Reiner, who also portrayed Alan Brady, host of “The Alan Brady Show,” the series’ workplace setting.
“He was, is and will always be the greatest entertainer I have ever seen.”
The first episode airing on “The Dick Van Dyke Show — Now In Living Color,” is “Where Did I Come From,” where Ritchie (Larry Matthews), the 6-year-old son of Rob and Laura Petrie (Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore), asks his parents the inevitable “Where did I come from?’ question, and they recall the days before his birth.
The episode originally aired on Jan. 3, 1962 during the series’ first season.
The second episode is “Never Bathe on Saturday,” when the Petries’ romantic second honeymoon becomes a disaster when Laura’s toe gets caught in a bath spout. The episode originally aired on March 31, 1965, during the series’ fourth season.
Reiner wrote both episodes.
“The Dick Van Dyke Show” aired from 1961-66, winning 15 Emmys, including outstanding comedy series in each of its final four seasons.
