DATALAND, a downtown Los Angeles museum focused on artificial intelligence art, Tuesday announced the four artists selected for the inaugural class of its AI Artist Residency.
DATALAND opened earlier this year at The Grand in downtown Los Angeles. Officials said the museum features exhibitions exploring the intersection of art and artificial intelligence and serves as a public repository for nature-focused datasets used in AI research and artistic projects.
The four artists were selected from more than 500 applicants representing disciplines including visual art, architecture, performance and creative technology, according to the museum.
The inaugural residents are New York-based artist Maya Man; artist, architect and computational designer Lucia Rebolino; Los Angeles artist Penny Slinger; and inclusive arts practitioner Jess Starns.
Each artist will receive $25,000 in project support and develop new work in collaboration with Refik Anadol Studio using DATALAND’s Large Nature Model, an open-access generative artificial intelligence model trained exclusively on nature data from scientific institutions.
Residents also will have access to mentorship from studio staff and individualized mentoring sessions with DATALAND co-founder Refik Anadol.
“One of the dreams behind DATALAND has always been to create more than a museum,” Anadol said. “We envision it as a living platform where artists, researchers, scientists and technologists come together to explore AI as a new cultural medium.”
The residency runs through December and will conclude with a public showcase featuring immersive installations, artist talks and discussions on the evolving role of artificial intelligence in culture. The exhibition is expected to remain on view into early 2027, officials said.
