The Port of Los Angeles saw a 6.7 percent rise in cargo volumes in August compared with last year, making it the busiest month since August 2010, according to figures released Monday.
The port handled 757,702 twenty-foot-equivalent units (TEUs) last month, up from 709,675TEUs in 2013.
Port officials attributed the improvement on previous volumes to the peak season and larger ships using the Los Angeles port.
Imports in August came in at 383,551 TEUs, up 7.8 percent from 355,682 TEUs in 2013.
Exports increased by 6.16 percent to 168,248 TEUs from 158,484 TEUs in 2013.
The total combined loaded imports and exports went up 7.3 percent, from 514,167 TEUs in 2013 to 551,799 TEUs this year. Once empty containers are added, the increase in rise in cargo volumes comes out as 5.3 percent above 2013.
Overall volumes for the first eight months of 2014 were 7.61 percent higher than the same period last year, port officials said.
