A judge handling juvenile dependency cases in Monterey Park has been diagnosed as having symptoms consistent with the coronavirus and was directed Monday to self-quarantine, along with some court staff.

The judge at the Edmund D. Edelman Children’s Courthouse, who was not publicly named, has not been tested thus far and the action was taken “in an abundance of caution,” according to a statement issued by the Los Angeles Superior Court.

The court also notified attorneys and other agencies with cases in the affected courtroom, including employees with the Department of Children and Family Services, the Children’s Law Center, the Los Angeles Dependency Lawyers, County Counsel and the Sheriff’s Department.

“The court will make every effort to advise all persons who may have been exposed to the affected judge,” the court’s statement says.

The courtroom and judge’s chambers have been cleaned in accordance with guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the courthouse will remain open.
