A 55-hour closure of the on- and off-ramps to and from the northbound San Diego (5) Freeway at Avery Parkway in Mission Viejo will begin Friday night to permit the start of the reconstruction of the Avery Parkway interchange.
The closure will be in effect from 10 p.m. Friday to approximately 5 a.m. Monday to allow the beginning of the widening of the Avery Parkway interchange to nearly double its capacity, helping ease the flow of traffic in the area, said Eric Carpenter, a media relations specialist with the Orange County Transportation Authority.
The southbound on- and off-ramps at Avery Parkway will be open, Carpenter said.
One lane of Avery Parkway will be open in each direction between Camino Capistrano in Laguna Niguel and Marguerite Parkway in Mission Viejo.
Drivers on northbound Interstate 5 wanting to exit at Avery Parkway can exit at Junipero Serra Road or Crown Valley Parkway.
Drivers that would use the Avery Parkway on-ramp to northbound Interstate 5 can instead use the Crown Valley Parkway loop on-ramp or direct on-ramp.
Businesses in the area will be open for regular hours through the weekend.
The Avery Parkway interchange expansion is part of the $595 million I-5 South Improvement Project to widen the freeway between the San Joaquin Hills (73) Toll Road and El Toro Road that began in 2019 and is scheduled to be completed in 2025.
