The Riverside County Board of Supervisors Tuesday approved a $180,000 allocation to upgrade a library parking lot, using money drawn from a special fund designated for projects in economically challenged unincorporated communities.
In a 5-0 vote without comment, the board authorized the expenditure from the Unincorporated Community Fund for resurfacing and expansion of the Valle Vista Library overflow lot.
The project is in the Third District, represented by Supervisor Chuck Washington, and was among multiple items identified in a needs assessment put together last year by the Executive Office, officials said.
The Unincorporated Community Fund was established by the board in the current fiscal year and is the newest sub-account intended to address infrastructure, service and other needs in the most “disadvantaged communities.”
As part of the 2021-22 budget, the board voted to set aside $5 million for projects, and those funds are intended to be divvied up evenly between all five supervisorial districts.
It’s unclear whether all of the money will be expended before the end of the fiscal year on June 30, or if some of it will be carried over to 2022-23.
The Valle Vista Library project will add 11,000 square feet of parking space, according to Washington.
The community is just east of Hemet, off Highway 74, with a population of just over 16,000 residents.
