A person was killed when a vehicle went off a cliff on State Route 74 in the San Jacinto Mountains Saturday.

The crash was reported at 10:45 a.m. near Pinyon Pines, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Fire officials said the vehicle fell about 200 to 300 feet down an embankment, ejecting an occupant, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

When firefighters arrived, the vehicle was engulfed in flames but the blaze was contained by about 11:30 a.m.

The crash prompted a Sigalert, and SR-74 was temporarily shut down in both directions from the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument Visitor Center to SR-371, according to the CHP.

The highway reopened at around 2:55 p.m.
