A 2-year-old colt who had yet to run a race has died after suffering a training injury at Los Alamitos Race Course, state horse racing officials reported.

Bentworth died Wednesday, according to the California Horse Racing Board. His injury was listed as “musculoskeletal,” but no further details were immediately available.

He is the third horse to die from a racing or training injury at the Cypress track this year. Two horses died after suffering racing injuries on Jan. 2.

Santa Anita Park has also had three racehorse deaths this year, all from training injuries, including I Win Again, a 3-year-old colt who died Friday, according to the CHRB.

Los Alamitos saw 13 horses die from racing or training injuries in 2023.
