The Palm Springs City Council approved nearly $9 million in funds from Measure J, a one-cent sales tax increase approved in 2011, for a street-paving rehabilitation project this year, officials announced Friday.
“This is the most money ever allocated for annual street paving — and it’s all thanks to Measure J, which continues to be a huge economic booster for the city of Palm Springs,” Mayor Jeffrey Bernstein said in a statement. “Perhaps most importantly, this is money that primarily comes from tourist dollars and not our residents. It’s a win-win!”
Starting in Spring, 50 street segments will be freshly paved with asphalt throughout Palm Springs, according to city officials. The streets set for repaving were available for review at engagepalmsprings.com.
Measure J has funded hundreds of citywide services and improvement projects including the Downtown Revitalization Project, the new Downtown Park, renovation of Welwood Murray Memorial Library and a new kitchen at the Mizell Center, officials said.
“A big thank you to the residents of Palm Springs for voting to approve Measure J, which continues to bring in millions of dollars for capital and community improvement projects that are improving quality of life in Palm Springs for generations to come,” said City Manager Scott Stiles.
