A brush fire that erupted on the north end of Homeland, charring an estimated 15 acres and prompting several road closures, was 100% contained Tuesday.
The non-injury Juniper Fire was reported at 5 p.m. Monday in the area of Juniper Flats and Mapes roads, just north of Highway 74, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The agency said multiple engine and hand crews from the county, Hemet Fire Department and neighboring agencies were sent to the location and encountered flames moving rapidly through medium vegetation to the east.
By midnight, the blaze was fully contained. Crews were slated to spend most of Tuesday mopping up and knocking down any remaining hot spots, officials said.
The fire had jumped Juniper Flats, spreading into a ravine and disrupting traffic on the two-lane road, which the California Highway Patrol shut down from the highway going north. Officers also closed Gilmore Road south of St. Clair Road for public safety.
Two Cal Fire air tankers and two water-dropping helicopters from Hemet-Ryan Airport less than 10 miles away initiated runs on the brusher, enabling firefighters to halt its forward rate of spread by nightfall.
No homes or other structures were damaged.
Cal Fire prevention officers were dispatched to investigate whether the blaze had been intentionally set.
