Firefighters took about three hours Saturday to keep a vegetation fire from spreading beyond 15 acres north of Moreno Valley between Riverside and San Bernardino counties.
The so-called Smiley Fire was reported at 2:36 p.m. Saturday in an unincorporated area at San Timoteo Canyon Road and Smiley Boulevard, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.
The forward progress of the fire was reported stopped at 5:44 p.m.
At 6:20 p.m., officials reported the fire was 15% contained by lines of cleared vegetation and that firefighters were working in steep terrain to extend containment lines in steep terrain.
Firefighters from CalFire in Riverside and San Bernardino counties and the Redlands Fire Department planned to spend several hours clearing vegetation around the fire and putting out hot spots, fire officials said.
