Coachella Valley Unified District officials released three reports regarding mold findings inside two classrooms at John Kelley Elementary School in Thermal that revealed the affected areas were free of mold Thursday.

Districts officials revealed the mold findings last Thursday and contracted a certified environmental testing firm to conduct an independent assessment.

An unspecified number of students and staff at the affected areas were immediately removed and relocated to other spaces within the facility to continue instruction without interruption.

The first report titled “Limited Contamination Assessment: Airborne and Surface Fungal Structures” conducted by Safeguard EnviroGroup on Nov. 24 revealed classrooms 52 and 53 located at 87163 Center St. indicated indoor mold contamination and conditions that supported mold growth. The firm recommended asbestos and lead-based paint sampling prior to disturbing building materials. During the assessment, they did not specify the cause of the mold.

The second report conducted by the firm on Dec. 5 revealed no asbestos found inside the classrooms based on laboratory results, nor was there a hazard from lead-based paint.

The final report conducted on Saturday revealed that “a detailed post-remediation visual and olfactory inspection to verify that all identified mold-contaminated materials had been removed or cleaned and that no musty odors were present.”
