A motorist sustained moderate injuries Wednesday in a two-vehicle collision in Thousand Palms.

The collision was reported at about 8 a.m. Wednesday on Monterey Avenue and Varner Road, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The agency said a semi truck traveling at an unconfirmed speed made a right turn onto Monterey Avenue when it crashed into a GMC SUV. The impact from the crash caused the semi to catch fire, which was extinguished a short time later by the Riverside County Fire Department.

The SUV driver, who was not identified, was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs. The big rig driver did not sustain any injuries, the CHP said.
