The Port of Long Beach touted what officials described as “impressive cargo numbers” last month, representing its third-busiest May on record.

Long Beach CEO Noel Hacegaba said the port moved 842,030 twenty-foot equivalent units in May, a 31.7% increase from the same month last year. The port official thanked members of ILWU Local 13 for their work in reaching that goal.

Imports rose 40% to 418,851 TEUs, while exports also increased by 32.9% to 109,168 TEUs. Empty containers increased as well, by 21.8%, to 314,012 TEUs.

“Our dock workers at the Port of Long Beach moved 842,000 TEUs, a solid month, and that’s despite all the uncertainty surrounding trade and geopolitical instability going on around the world,” Hacegaba said in a short video regarding May’s cargo data.

Year-to-date, the port has moved 4,050,247 TEUs, a 0.2% increase compared to the first five months of 2025, which officials said puts them on pace with their busiest year on record.

“Those cargo numbers are made possible by the men and women of the ILWU that keep the cargo moving safely and efficiently for the Port of Long Beach. To everybody on the waterfront, thank you for your hard work and commitment,” ILWU Local 13 President Mario “Moe” Medina said in the video.
