Ridership across Metro’s bus and rail systems rose by nearly 9% in July compared with the same month last year, an increase of about 2 million boardings, the transit agency announced Tuesday.
Metro reported 25,847,617 boardings in July, with the largest gains occurring on weekends. Saturday ridership increased by nearly 11% compared with July 2025, while ridership was also up year-over-year on Sundays and weekdays.
Average Saturday ridership totaled 694,263 boardings, while Sunday ridership increased by nearly 9% to an average of 597,114 boardings. Weekday ridership averaged 903,446 boardings, up 7.41% from July 2025, according to Metro.
The agency attributed some of the increase to events across Los Angeles County, including World Cup matches, fan zones and viewing parties. Other events that helped boost ridership included Fourth of July celebrations, home games for the Dodgers, Los Angeles Football Club, Sparks and Galaxy, events at local museums, CicLAvia in Hollywood, Monster Jam at Crypto.com Arena, Hilary Duff at the Kia Forum and the Vans Warped Tour in Long Beach.
Metro officials said rail ridership continued to grow following several major transit openings since 2025, including the LAX/Metro Transit Center, the A Line extension to Pomona and the first section of the D Line extension.
In July, rail ridership rose by nearly 17% to 6,592,276, marking the eighth consecutive month of rail ridership increases. Growth was strong for both weekdays and weekends, with Saturdays standing out with 19.3% growth over July 2025 to 191,365 average ridership.

The J Line, a bus rapid transit route used by many riders for World Cup activities, experienced a 7.6% year-over-year ridership increase.
Total bus ridership in July stood at 19,255,341 boardings, Metro said. These numbers exclude the 212,865 rides taken on the direct enhanced service routes to Los Angeles Stadium for World Cup fans attending the matches, which were announced previously.
