Two lanes of the southbound Golden State (5) Freeway remained closed Sunday evening after a big rig caught fire near Pyramid Lake.
The fire was reported about 8:30 p.m. Sunday on the Golden State Freeway south of Vista Del Lago Road, in the community of Sandberg, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The driver pulled over to the right shoulder when the big rig caught fire and tried to put out flames with a fire extinguisher, a witness told the CHP. However, the big rig became fully engulfed in flames.
Los Angeles County Fire Department firefighters put out the fire at 9:22 p.m., the CHP stated.
A Sigalert was issued at 9:04 p.m. shutting down the nos. 2, 3 and 4 lanes until a Caltrans crew arrived and was able to reopen the No. 2 lane while setting up a hard closure for lanes 3 and 4 at 10:24 p.m.
No injuries were reported.
