A fatal series of collisions and an overturned cement mixer closed the southbound 5 and northbound 405 freeways early Saturday downtown and in Culver City.
A man died and southbound lanes of the Golden State (5) Freeway were closed for more than three hours after separate accidents in the same location.
The unidentified victim was involved in the initial collision with another vehicle, just north of the San Bernardino (10) Freeway at 1:20 a.m.
The driver of a big rig told a videographer at the scene that a taxi had swerved to avoid the collision, causing his vehicle to swerve as well. This caused the vehicle to jacknife, the driver said.
A sigalert was issued for all southbound lanes of the freeway at 1:35 a.m. and remained in effect as of 4:30 a.m.
In Culver City, All northbound lanes of the San Diego (405) Freeway were shut down after a big rig overturned and began leaking fuel early today.
The accident occurred at Culver Boulevard around 4:10 a.m., according to the California Highway Patrol online incident log.
Firefighters used brooms and shovels to move the fast-drying load of cement from the overturned mixer.
A videographer at the scene said all but the slow lane of the freeway’s northbound lanes were closed as Culver City Fire Department firefighters pushed the cement to a K rail alongside the center emergency lane.
