A worker suffered leg and foot injuries Monday when he fell about 15 feet down a 40-foot construction pit in San Gabriel today, authorities said.
The accident at Mission Road and Ramona Street occurred about 8:15 a.m., and firefighters hoisted the unidentified worker out about 8:35 a.m., according to the San Gabriel Fire Department.
The hole, about 6 feet in diameter, is part of railroad grade crossing project. The man was working about halfway from the bottom when he fell, the fire department reported.
The worker communicated with rescuers and was extracted using a lowered basket. He was taken to Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena, where he was treated for non-specified leg and foot injuries.
The site is part of the 2.2-mile ACE San Gabriel Trench grade separation project. A 1.4-mile section of Union Pacific railroad track will be sunk into a trench through the city, according to the city of San Gabriel.
“Our foremost concern is for the worker who was injured and we are relieved that his injuries are reported as non-life-threatening,” said ACE Construction Authority CEO Mark Christoffels.
“ACE Construction Authority is working closely with the contractor to thoroughly investigate this incident to ensure this does not happen again,” he said. “Our top priority during construction is the safety of workers and the public.”
