Two Banning High School students were killed and two others were injured in a two-vehicle collision in Wilmington Thursday afternoon and police were investigating if the teenagers were involved in street racing.

One other person was injured in the crash, which happened about 3:15 p.m. at 350 W. Pacific Coast Highway, near Island Avenue, said Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

The deceased victims were the driver and front passenger of a red Honda, said Sgt. Shaun Luciano of the Los Angeles School Police Department. They were brother and sister, according to the Daily Breeze, which reported that hundreds of people had come to the crash scene.

Two students who were rear-seat passengers were injured and taken to a hospital, Luciano said, adding that all four in the Honda attended nearby Banning High School.

One of the surviving patients suffered a critical injury, Humphrey said, but it was unclear which one.

Of the two other injuries, one was considered serious and the other minor, he said.

Police were investigating reports that the Honda had been involved in street racing at the time of the crash, said Officer Sara Faden of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
