A man who was brought back from Mexico to face charges stemming from a January 2011 drive-by shooting in Pomona that resulted in a woman’s death the following month was sentenced to 31 years in state prison, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced Wednesday.
Ruben Vargas, 38, was sentenced Tuesday after pleading no contest to voluntary manslaughter for the Jan. 4, 2011, shooting of Lina Romero, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
The 31-year-old woman died about a month after being shot. Another woman who was in the home at the time of the shooting was not injured.
Along with his plea to manslaughter, Vargas pleaded no contest to one felony count each of attempted murder, assault with a semi-automatic firearm and assault with a deadly weapon and admitted gang and gun allegations.
Vargas was returned to the United States in December 2013 after he was found in Ensenada, Mexico.
A second man, Andrew Alvarez, 25, was arrested shortly after the shooting. He pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter and assault with a deadly weapon and was sentenced to 25 years and four months in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
