At least one law enforcement officer shot at a suspect as federal deputy marshals tried to arrest him in Carson on Wednesday, but the man fled and remained at large, authorities said.
The confrontation occurred about 9:50 a.m. near 221st Street and Grace Avenue, said sheriff’s Lt. Arthur Escamillas of the Carson Station.
It was unclear if the wanted man was wounded, Escamillas said.
Laura Vega of the U.S. Marshals Service said that agents tried to take Keith Leon Smith, 46, of Carson, into custody for probation violation.
Smith was participating in a supervised release program after serving a federal sentence for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine.
She said that at one point, Smith tried to run over an agent, which caused law enforcement to fire at him.
“He was able to escape,” Vega said. No law enforcement personnel were injured.
A perimeter was set up, but as of this evening, Smith had not been found.
