A 19-year-old man was critically wounded in an officer-involved shooting at a vacant apartment in Long Beach Thursday afternoon, police said.

No officers were injured in the shooting, which occurred about 2:45 p.m. after officers were dispatched to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Hoffman Avenue to investigate “a report of several subjects unlawfully trespassing and tagging inside a vacant apartment,” Sgt. Megan Zabel said.

“When the officers arrived, they discovered a broken window to the apartment. The officers located a second window that was open and the screen was removed,” Zabel said. “An officer observed a male subject inside the apartment, and an officer-involved shooting occurred.”

The wounded man was in critical condition when taken to a hospital for treatment, the sergeant said.

No details were released about what, specifically, prompted police to open fire.

Long Beach police homicide detectives were at the scene, Zabel said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office also responded and was conducting an independent investigation, as is standard in officer-involved shooting cases, she said.
