A woman was killed and a man suffered serious burns in a fire that caused significant damage to a condominium at a four-story complex in Woodland Hills.

The fire was reported at 9:34 p.m. Saturday in the 21600 block of Burbank Boulevard, just east of Owensmouth Avenue, Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said.

A 157,000-square-foot unit at the center of the building’s second floor was engulfed in flames that ultimately caused an estimated $10 million in property damage and $500,000 in monetary losses, according to Humphrey.

As 49 firefighters battled the blaze, they found the dead woman’s body, and rescued the injured man. One firefighter was also injured, and suffered smoke exposure, Humphrey said.

It took 49 firefighters 24 minutes to knock down the flames, confining the damage to the single second-floor unit, he said.

Firefighters could not determine whether the building had smoke alarms, but Humphrey said the 34-year-old unit did not have sprinklers.

The cause remains under investigation. Meanwhile, those displaced by the fire are staying with friends and neighbors, Humphrey said.
