A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot Monday in Rosemead, and his mother was arrested Monday night on suspicion of murder.

Lai Hang, 49, of Rosemead, was booked at the sheriff’s Temple Station and is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, said sheriff’s Deputy Amber Smith.

The motive for the shooting is still under investigation, Smith said.

George Hang died at the scene of the shooting, which was reported about 10:10 a.m. at the Valley Hotel in the 8700 block of Valley Boulevard, according to the sheriff’s department.

Witnesses at the motel said they heard shots fired at about 5 a.m. It’s unclear why the shooting wasn’t reported to authorities until about five hours later.

Sheriff’s officials said the boy’s mother, who called 911, was taken to a sheriff’s station for questioning.

A handgun was found inside the motel room, officials said.

The boy and his mother apparently checked into the hotel Sunday.

A woman at the hotel, Jessie Diaz, said she saw the pair walking outside around midnight, and there were no signs of any trouble or fighting. She said she heard the shots early this morning.

“I got scared. I got really scared,” she said. “It sounded so close, you know?”
