A Newhall man was charged Friday with murdering his wife of about two months, who was found dead in May at their home.

Robert George Arvizu, 48, entered a not guilty plea to charges stemming from the death of Courtney Arvizu. She was found dead before dawn May 24 by sheriff’s deputies conducting a welfare check at the couple’s home in the 22800 block of Ninth Street.

Authorities said then that the 25-year-old woman had injuries consistent with blunt force trauma.

Arvizu, who has remained jailed since his May 24 arrest, was initially charged with two felony counts of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury involving a separate victim.

Arvizu allegedly assaulted a friend who gave him a ride home from a party that the defendant attended with his wife, according to Deputy District Attorney Julie Kramer.

If convicted as charged, Arvizu could face up to 30 years to life in state prison.
