Authorities were still trying to figure out Sunday why a silver Mercedes suddenly veered off a freeway in northern Los Angeles County, killing a passenger.

The passenger was killed and two other people were injured when the pricey vehicle went off the Golden State (5) Freeway in Castaic and crashed through a fence, a California Highway Patrol officer said.

The accident was reported about midday Saturday on the northbound Golden State Freeway south of Parker Road, said CHP Officer Patrick Kimball.

Three people were transported to hospitals, said Los Angeles County Fire Dispatch Supervisor Robert Diaz.

The passenger died at the hospital, Kimball said.

The crash was under investigation, he said, and no further details were immediately available.
