A stolen car suspect shot and wounded by deputies Monday night was captured early Tuesday morning after a two-and-a-half-hour search that included the use of police dogs in Rosewood, an unincorporated area next to Compton.

The deputy-involved-shooting took place in the 15800 block of South Haskins Avenue about 9:45 p.m. Monday, said sheriff’s Deputy Mike Barraza.

But the genesis of incident came about 75 minutes earlier when an area resident reported to Compton station deputies that the suspect had pointed a gun at him earlier in the day, according to Deputy Kevin Moody. The man who reported the brandishing also gave deputies a description of the suspect and the vehicle he was driving at the time, Moody said,

Shortly after the report was made, deputies spotted the suspect sitting in a white Infiniti parked in the 15800 block of South Tarrant Avenue, Moody said. When deputies approached the vehicle the suspect got out, ran behind the car and allegedly pointed a gun at the deputies. At that point the DIS occurred.

Although wounded, the suspect still managed to run from the scene, Moody said. A containment area was set up around the intersection South Haskins Avenue and Alondra Boulevard, according to Moody.

The suspect was finally captured by deputies around 12:15 a.m. He was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound to his lower body and transported to a hospital, according to Moody. Deputies then determined that the Infiniti he was sitting in had been reported stolen by Los Angeles police from Foothill Division in 2015.

Deputies also recovered a handgun from the scene, Moody added.

The DIS will be investigated by the department’s Internal Affairs and Homicide bureaus as well as the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s office Justice System Integrity Division and the Sheriff’s Executive Force Review Committee.

Anyone with information on this shooting was asked to call the LA Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
